Who we are.

Choose Sierra Firearms Academy for expert firearms training, backed by decades of law enforcement experience and a commitment to high-quality, practical education.

Mike Robbins, Dave Keller, Pat Lee and Rocky Triplett are your instructors at the Sierra Firearms Academy. Mike & Dave founded the company in 1994 and were the primary, full time Police Firearms Instructors for two of Nevada’s largest Law Enforcement agencies for over 28 years combined. Mike retired from the WCSO in 2004 after nearly 27 years of service. Dave retired from RPD in 2006 with over 30 years.

Together we were responsible for the basic and continuing firearms and tactics education for over 800 sworn Police Officers, including special teams. We also taught the High Sierra Police Academy firearms, and other skills. Combined, we have nearly 60 years of Law Enforcement experience, over 47 years of SWAT experience and over 50 years of teaching firearms skills. And, we have taught a few thousand civilians their shooting skills too. We are all very skilled shooters, Mike is a USPSA Master Class shooter.

Pat joined our company in 2017 to carry on the tradition of excellence, and now Rocky is joining us in 2021. You won’t find a better crew anywhere.

Who do you want to learn the most critical skills you’ll ever need from? Do you want accurate legal information from those who know? Or is something less good enough? Our training is street learned and proven, not “theory” or something read in a gun magazine. We have been there and done that, so we know what we are talking about.. Compare our backgrounds with anyone and you’ll see we are by far the most qualified to teach you.

Pat Lee has 29 years of Law Enforcement experience with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), retiring in 2019. He proudly served our local community in Detention, Patrol, Investigations, SWAT, and Training. He became a firearms instructor in 1995 and continued to build his skills throughout his time as a Law Enforcement professional, teaching firearms, TASER, and Force on Force tactics to new recruits, Patrol Deputies, Supervisors, and SWAT Team members. Pat has also instructed at a national level, instructing law enforcement officers across the USA in counter terrorism tactics and weapons of mass destruction mitigation. Pat was an instructor at the Center for Domestic Preparedness and has imparted his knowledge and experience to law enforcement men and women all over the United States. He has a true passion for public safety!

Rocky Triplett retired from the Sparks Police Department in January of 2019 after serving our community for 29 years. In 1995, he became a firearms instructor and served as a lead instructor for Sparks PD and for the Sparks PD SWAT Team. He was fortunate to serve in these positions for over ten years. Additionally, he served as an assistant firearms instructor in the regional law enforcement academy for several years. During his career, he also had the opportunity to instruct Chemical Weapons, Force on Force and Officer Safety to the sworn staff of Sparks PD. He was incredibly blessed with an amazing career serving the citizens of Reno and Sparks and helping the officers he instructed!

Dave, Rocky and Pat also developed curriculum and instructed Active Assailant response tactics throughout their careers.

We train in a professional new training facility, and a professional range facility. We are not the cheapest guys in town, but you will get what you pay for. We have been in this business continuously since 1994 serving Northern Nevada shooters. Ask around and check us out.
